The second most influential German consumers' watchdog 'Oeko-Test' (translated: eco-test) has revealed that 12 out of 13 air mattresses failed set 'health standards' due to toxic compounds they consider dangerous for kids and adults. Only one inflatable mattress got grade 'D' (satisfactory).
Reason: The softener for plastics called diisononylphthalate (DINP) makes up to 20 to 30 per cent (w/w). Because of the danger of DINP, parents are advised not to have their kids inflate the mattress. Due to safety standards, toys mustn't contain more than 0.1 per cent DINP. Therefore, those failed mattresses for swimming in lakes or sea contain more than 200-300 times the legal safety limits.
Nice to know when going to the beach.
