The 'pork' bone of contention - why a female German school teacher has gotten ill

Same incident but different stories. Bild wrote as headline:"Female German teacher bullied away from school by Muslims"

The respective incident ocurred about seven months ago.

The mass circulation 'Bildzeitung' reported about a female teacher Ursula E. (59) for math and arts (having worked for 18 years at the school) who allegedly got suspended and officially advised 'to apply' for transfer to another school after she had mistakenly served a pork schnitzel instead of a chicken schnitzel to a Muslim student at her ' 302 student - high school' (Christophorus Gesamtschule, Betzdorf, Federal State of Rhineland-Palatinate, SW-Germany ) in the cafeteria where she was on duty for lunch service for the young crowds.

A young Turkish student asked her what kind of schnitzel he got. Ursula E. didn't know whether it was pork ('haram') or chicken ('halal'). Another Turkish student, a girl, having heard her saying that, immediately gave her schnitzel to a German girl.

Ursula E. got an angry call from the boy's mother the next day. A few days later 15 Turkish mothers and fathers of other students appeared at the school, and wanted the headmaster to fire the teacher. The school's directorate immediately suspended Ursula E. and notified the state school commissioner for the respective district.

The supervising state official gave Ursula E. the advice to personally apply for getting transferred to another school. After the 'incident' all students have been served only vegetarian, chicken oder beef food in their cafeteria albeit having only 45 Muslim students there.

The teacher has tried to apologize a couple of times to the young student she mistakenly served the dish, in vain.

She has been on paid sick leave for seven months due to depression and states of anxiety and has sued the school against her suspension.

A press speaker of the supervising education authority denied Ursula E.'s suspension but affirmed the sick leave of hers. "The incident at the school is no issue anymore there, and, in the meantime, even pork has been served again", the speaker said.

The conservative-oriented F.A.Z. wrote in today's (Thurs) edition on page two:" Betzdorf - pork in schnitzel's coat ".

The speaker of the supervising authority (ADD) told FAZ that after the incident a few Turkish parents had complained to the principal. Whether or not the demand of firing the teacher was expressed by them, the speaker couldn't confirm. The principal did not suspend Ursula E., instead he gave her the advice to stay at home for a couple of days in order to cool off the tensions.

After seven months of paid sick leave, the ADD will be checking Ursula's fitness for further school service. The medical check will determine whether or not the teacher shall be sent to early retirement due to her 'disabilities'.

The speaker of the state education ministry of Rhineland-Palatinate also denied Ursula suspension from school service.

Trust me, the same would have happened here if a teacher had served a pulled pork sandwich instead of a pulled chicken one to a Jewish student. Or a beef sandwich to a Hindu, for that matter. The teacher screwed up, big time. The "sick leave" thing sound to me like the protections of a union contract, when she probably should have been just plain fired.

The "sick leave" thing sound to me like the protections of a union contract,

Nope, it's a special German-Austrian issue, most teachers there don't have (limited) contracts but are civil servants (for life-time) due to a federal law based public service loyalty by swearing in to this 'office'.

You might compare those civil servants with 'soldiers' (in this case in a civilian public 'task force'). In cases of misconduct of an 'public office holder = civil servant', they face disciplinary action, sometimes even penal action at criminal court and/or administrative court.

Finally and to make it clear to anybody, most German (Austrian) teachers are not employees with (limited) work contracts. Even, those (temp) teachers with limited or unlimited contracts wouldn't be fired straight away - OK, that's a union issue then, for sure but also day-to-day business at labor courts where such 'pea nuts' cases would be rejected in the first place.

The teacher's case at German labor court would also be regarded like shooting with cannons on ducks, too!

On the other hand, here, your ZERO-tolerance policy hasn't reached hearts and minds yet.

Therefore, different countries, different customs, y'know.

Btw, I fully understand your POV from your perspective.

I feel sorry for the teacher. So she made a mistake! Now she is penalized for a mistake? She tried to apologize, but that isn't good enough?! Do muslims never make mistakes? I would be pretty ticked off if I were a student at that school and I was served vegetarian food instead of beef or pork, all because of the muslim students having a fit because someone accidentally gave them a piece of meat (which he/she did not eat).

Now she is penalized for a mistake?

Actions have consequences.
